Just can’t seem to lose weight, while your legs or arms feel heavy, painful or tense? Then you could very well have lipedema. An annoying condition that leaves its mark both physically and mentally. In this article you will read what exactly lip edema is and how Essenza Clinics can help you feel better in your body again.
What is lipedema?
Lipedema is a condition in which fat is stored in an abnormal way, usually in the legs or arms. These fat deposits are often sensitive or painful, and do not disappear with weight loss or intense exercise. Lipedema occurs almost exclusively in women, and is often hereditary.
What symptoms do you get from lipedema?
Lipedema often develops gradually. At first, you may only notice that your legs or arms feel heavier, but over time other symptoms may develop. Think of feeling tense, pressure pain or fatigue. The skin often feels uneven, and bruises develop quickly. Many women also notice that their body proportions change; the legs and/or arms become fuller, while the torso remains slimmer.
The impact of lipedema
The effects of lipedema go beyond physical discomfort. The visible changes in your body and feelings of misunderstanding from those around you can cause uncertainty or frustration. Some women avoid clothing they previously enjoyed wearing, or feel less free to stay active.
It is important to us that you feel heard and understood. Together we determine in a consultation how we can help you reduce your symptoms.

Treatment of lipedema
There is no treatment that can cure lipedema, but there are several options to reduce symptoms:
- Compression therapy
Wearing compression stockings can help reduce pain and improve your range of motion. - Lymphatic Drainage
With a specialized massage technique (manual lymphatic drainage) or treatment with an LPG device (a device specifically for connective tissue massage), fluid drainage can improve and reduce tightness. - Liposuction
In cases of severe symptoms, liposuction treatment may be the answer. This involves the safe removal of fat deposits so that the pressure on the tissues decreases and your body becomes more balanced.
Is liposuction for lipedema covered?
Unfortunately, liposuction for lipedema is (usually) not covered by health insurance companies unless there are serious health problems directly related to the condition. Are you curious about how this works in your case? We are happy to help you apply with your health insurance company, if you meet the right criteria.
