After gastric bypass surgery, your gastrointestinal system can absorb fewer nutrients than necessary to maintain your weight so you will lose weight at first. How much that is varies from person to person. After a period of 6-12 months, your weight stabilizes and you will know how much you have lost. Depending on the amount of weight loss, there is an effect on the skin. The effects of substantial weight loss on the skin are mainly sagging skin. That skin is going to droop. This is often most obvious in the abdomen, breasts, upper arms and thighs (the 4 B’s and sometimes the buttocks). The elasticity of that skin is gone and the skin does not shrink back. The only way to get the skin reasonably tight again is to take out a piece in between. That means a tummy tuck, a breast elevator (with or without augmentation to replenish lost volume), an arm elevator and a thigh elevator. Such corrections come with scars, and especially the tummy tuck and thigh elevator are major procedures after which you cannot work and exercise for weeks.

In people who have lost a lot of weight due to gastric bypass surgery, the elasticity of the skin is virtually gone. After a correction for excess skin, we often see that the skin slackens slightly afterwards but otherwise the effect is long-lasting. Provided the weight remains reasonably stable, of course.
